Authenticity in Porn equals Quality

When I watch a lot of the Big Name porn out there, I find myself wanting to yell at my screen: “Give me something to identify with!” I’ve found myself thinking that there has to be something better than the over-produced movies with the uber-perfect actors that have an utterly impersonal feel, and the really bad, poorly mic’d, poorly acted porn flicks. I usually prefer amateur porn, because at least I get to see something authentic: real people going at it for real.

Authenticity is the key to that elusive “something” that most of us call quality erotic material. Authenticity opens the door to intimacy and connection — the two things people want most, I think. In a lot of ways porn is easier than erotica. People who pick porn want to get off watching other people having sex.

Simple enough. But what happens when I want something a little more nuanced? Something that will facilitate fantasy fulfillment, even if only vicariously? When I want something that feels intimate, something I can imagine myself being a part of, I have a really difficult time finding it. Sure, I’m picky — but quite a lot of people are, so I’m not alone. And a lot of those people are out there trying to create erotic material that fills that void, that niche. But we’re still difficult to find, because the content we’re producing ourselves is not out there in The Mainstream — not even in the mainstream of the adult business. It’s not that we’re not commercial enough, its mostly a matter of not having the exposure and funding to reach commercial critical mass. Many of us are fundamentally at odds with the Big Box porn companies out there because we go for quality over quantity every time.

One of the things I really enjoy about what I’m doing these days is getting to know other writers and sex educators, as well as people in the adult entertainment field, trying to make those connections with other people who also make the distinctions between those who are working in the adult-content industry because they love it, and those who are doing it for the money they think is there.
