Authenticity in Porn equals Quality

Authenticity in Porn equals Quality

When I watch a lot of the Big Name porn out there, I find myself wanting to yell at my screen: “Give me something to identify with!” I’ve found myself thinking that there has to be something better than the over-produced movies with the uber-perfect actors that have an utterly impersonal feel, and the really bad, poorly mic’d, poorly acted porn flicks. I usually prefer amateur porn, because at least I get to see something authentic: real people going at it for real. Authenticity is the key to that elusive “something” that most of us call quality erotic material. Authenticity opens the door to intimacy and connection — the two things people want most, I think. In a lot of ways porn is easier than erotica. People who pick porn want to get off watching other people having sex. Simple enough. But what happens when I want something a little…

Got Toys? Top 5 toys for women, men & couples

Collection of Silkenvoice's set toys

Silken on Sex #78: It is fair to say that I’m an enthusiastic masturbator and sex toy aficionado. My primary partner calls me his pervy dirty girl, and fortunately is not threatened by my self-pleasuring practices. He knows that my libido is off-the-charts and that it takes a herculean effort on anyone’s part (including my own) to keep me feeling satisfied for more than a few hours at a time. But he does try, and between his efforts and mine, we keep things very interesting. Which is where my chest full of sex toys comes in. I am grateful to be a woman, and grateful that so many people have put so much ingenuity and effort into accessorizing women’s pleasures.  Toys to fulfill our every pleasure, fantasy, and sexual need line the shelves of thousands of adult stores all over the world. And fortunately for men, I’ve noticed that the…

The First Amendment, Feminists, and Our Christian Nation

The First Amendment, Feminists, and Our Christian Nation

Image via Wikipedia I am one of those feminists who often finds herself at odds with other feminists. My mother was an old-school Andrea Dworkin-style lesbian separatist. I went to a women’s college, the same one that produced Betty Friedan (when I met her at a reunion she was a sharp-tongued, witty, and crotchety old woman) and Gloria Steinem, and, well, lets just say that the fact that I subscribed to Playboy raised more than a few eyebrows. For years I stopped self-identifying as a feminist because the young women around me demanded such conformity of opinions, particularly when it came to things like “pornography”. It always seemed to me that the distinction between healthy erotic objectification of women and exploitation of women was being missed, to the detriment of women, men, and families. On occasion I would quote Betty Freidan to my cohorts: “To suppress free speech in the…

Interview with a Pornographer

Interview with a Pornographer

From a recent IM interview (bold type is the interviewer): -As I mentioned in my email, I am working on a master’s thesis on pornographers, particularly purveyors of written pornography / erotica. I have read your stories and your blog. I would like to ask you some questions, if I may? -You may ask. I may even answer :) -Fair enough. How long have you been writing erotica? -I remember writing some fantasies down when I was 16 – 18 years old, then I stopped. I don’t remember why. I started again, in 2005. -Do you consider what you write ‘erotica’? -Yes… much of it. I try to write about the sensual and the sexual in a way that allows people to feel positive about their sexual arousal, rather than ‘dirty’ or ‘bad’. I’ve gotten feedback on one of my stories, in particular, that it was one of the few…
